ANGELS IN FLANDERS is the heroic true story of four courageous young women who defied Victorian prejudice - as well as German bombs and bullets - to operate their own medical dressing station on the front lines of World War 1.

The story opens in the Fall of 1914, when Elsie Knocker and Mairi Chisholm, both avid members of the British Motor Gypsy Club, volunteer for service in the Flying Ambulance Corps. The Corps has been created by Major Hector Munro to spirit the wounded from the Flanders battlefields to field hospitals in the rear.

The two young women are joined by British aristocrat Lady Dorothy Fielding, and a beautiful, 22-year old American nurse, Helen Gleason. But mere weeks after their deployment to Flanders, they discover the awful truth what's killing the soldiers is not their injuries, but the horrendous, three-mile drive over unpaved, rutted roads to the rear.

When the British Army refuses to act, the four women take matters into their own hands - by setting up their own medical post, right on the front line. From that moment on, they not only battle to save lives through some of the bloodiest attacks of the Western Front, but also find themselves fighting the British military establishment, determined to "put women in their place" and shut their post down.

And they would have been defeated, where it not for the persistence of Helen’s husband, Arthur Gleason, who has discovered the shocking extent of Britain’s and France’s casualties, as well as the fierce passion of a local nobleman, Baron de T'Serclaes, who has deeply and irrevocably fallen in love with Elsie.

Inspired by true characters and events, ANGELS IN FLANDERS is an epic drama of love, passion and bravery amidst some of the worst battle carnage the world has ever seen.

Angels in Flanders is based on seven years of scrupulous research into virtually all aspects of World War I, including the medical services, the principal commanders on both sides of the conflict, and the rapidly evolving military technology. While the dialog is fictitious, the broad outlines of the story are based on actual events.

Elsie Knocker, Mairi Chisholm, Dorothy Fielding and Helen and Arthur Gleason are all historical characters, and many of the astonishing adventures described in the book, such as their rescue of a German pilot trapped in No Man's Land, did take place. Both Elsie and Mairi were knighted by King Albert I for their bravery, and Elsie did marry a Belgian aristocrat, Harold Baron de T'Serclaes, ending the war as a Baroness.

Most importantly, ANGELS IN FLANDERS marks a unique moment in time when women emerged from their Victorian domesticity to fill positions and occupations vacated by conscripted men, thus launching the 20th century women's emancipation movement that would ultimately grant them full equality.

This novel based on fact, was most enjoyable. For me, as a person in the health care field it was interesting to see how things were done during WWI.
They were on the cusp of an ever advancing force of knowledge that has brought us to today's high tech medical practice. I liked the character development and the explanations that helped me understand more about that time in history. The only thing that surprises me is that there was no mention of the Spanish influenza that killed so many. Maybe it didn't touch the 'flying ambulances', I don't know. But, be that as it may, if you like historical novels based on fact, especially with health care of the time period included, as I do, then I think you'll enjoy this book.
