I was raised around soldiers, tanks, guns and the military lifestyle. I clearly remember Viet Nam and how our country was torn apart. I can still hear “Taps” being played at my brother, Mike’s funeral, and seeing my father cry, a heart break that will never heal. Groups of mothers against Viet Nam would, from time to time approach my mother, asking her, as the mother of a fallen soldier, to speak out against the Viet Nam Conflict. She always replied, “I’d be glad to, but I don’t think you want to hear what I would say.” Her bravery was as large as her sorrow. We were raised to be patriotic and do for our country what was needed, asked or not. We were taught that honor and duty were as vital as air and water. Time has taken a lot of sting out of Mike’s death yet he remains a hero to everyone who knew him, and the champion of our family.
I went along my life’s path, doing my best to be a productive citizen, and a good American. Then 9-11 happened. Until the moment I witnessed the second airplane hit the tower, I thought that had I ever been in a war, I would have laid down and played dead until it was over. That day changed everything for all of us. For me, in particular, I knew instantly that I could pick up a gun in defense of me and mine. I knew that I would stand shoulder to shoulder with the strongest and bravest among us. But from my place on my small path, I had nowhere to put my newly found machismo. Until one day…
The Military Mothers Prayer Group by sheer providence made itself known to me and presented a way I could participate with the active military. Being a donor to the USO just wasn’t enough. These mothers of military personnel learned that numbers of our troops received no mail while serving their country, especially those overseas. That is something up with which I cannot put! Finally, an avenue to possibly touch a soldier’s day. Finally, something I could contribute to the war effort, if you will. My verbal victory garden. So began my campaign.
I started writing letters and sending care packages. Three copies of each letter in an envelope to be shared and passed around. A letter for everybody. For Valentine’s Day I took a two foot tall card into our local grocery store asking each person I passed to show their support by signing it. The first signature was the scribbling of a 2 year old girl--was that sweet? Strangers offered to help pay postage and to contribute supplies to the care packages. The outpouring of support was beyond heart warming. A group of my friends, their children and I wrapped hundreds of presents for Christmas. Granted one gift may have been a single lip balm, or a pair of socks, or a used book, but we wanted to overwhelm them and possibly brighten their holiday away from loved ones. Not a single person who added to our effort felt less than wonderful, patriotic and useful. We have not lost our enthusiasm. Hopefully is it has been contagious.
I tried to write one letter a day, sometimes I wrote three. I was in the throes my own vortex.
Every day, sitting at the computer, the movie theatre in my mind flashed face after imaginary face of soldiers to whom I may be corresponding, thus the title, “Soldier of a 1,000 Faces.” In my letters I tried to talk to each and every one of them as if they were seated across from me at the dining room table in my home. I hope that feeling transcended the distance those letters traveled. I hope they left them with a feeling that there was a candle in the window expressly for them. And that they were thought about. That was my intention.

This book is a true inspriration for all. What Margaret did for our brave soldiers is remarkable. She refers to her letters as, "mundane goings-on," they are far from that. These letters brought our troops what they needed most, "A little bit of home!" Soldier on Margaret, and keep letting our, "True Heroes," know that they are loved and missed.!Product details

Soldier Of A 1000 Faces eBook Margaret Greer Benjamin Parsons Reviews
I have the unique privilege of being acquainted with Maggie Greer personally. And unique is what Maggie is! She's a "what-you-see-is-what-you get" kind of person. I can see her, and hear her, in each of the letters - her humor and her seriousness, her caring and her fun-loving personality all come through perfectly. She writes just like she talks - there is no pretense here! Any stranger who reads this book will feel as though they know her when they finish the book.
Ok, I know this book isn't about the author, but what better things to share in her letters, than a real life accounting of what these brave men and women are fighting for, and that person's gratefulness for her freedom, and the soldiers' sacrifice? I knew a little about the book before I read it, but got much more than I bargained for. What a great concept! If, after reading this book, you don't feel like you should also take up the cause of thanking those you protect our freedom so willingly, then you need to read it again!
I'll admit, I am a bit leery about self-published books, as they are often fraught with typos and punctuation and grammar errors (sometimes to the point of being unreadable). While there were a few, they didn't detract from the book at all. Kudos to your editor, girl!
What a wonderful book! Heartwarming, vividly written and funny! I could not put it down once I started. I have a son in the military and can only hope that when he gets stationed abroad someone like Ms Greer will see fit to write to him! I will never look at grasshoppers the same way again. Can't wait for the next book! Kudos to Ms Greer!
A heartwarming collection of letters this author wrote to men and women serving in a war zone
The author's style mixes humor with true and genuine caring and patriotism.
I recommend this book highly. I finished reading it in one sitting!
